I Hit My Head and Everything Changed
Moira NessThe series ‘I Hit My Head And Everything Changed’ was first created to be a visual accompaniment to a 2019 orchestral performance in collaboration with Brian Harman and Esprit Orchestra. The original arrangement has over 200 slides, while the work presented today creates a new, shorter story.
Selected text from twenty years of the artist’s personal digital history has been input into a text-sorting algorithm. This particular algorithm rearranges the order of words and sentences, creating new content and contexts stemming from their digital archive.
Through the Content-Aware Fill, a visual algorithm in Photoshot, areas of the photo are simultaneously sampled and new "smart" visual content is created. The artist changed the source information from the usual photographic images to simple black and white text. The Content-Aware Fill tries to make sense of the text by treating it similarly to a photograph, unable to decipher letters or words. The patterns created are often confusing and unintelligible, but upon closer inspection hints of method and repetition can be spotted. A deeply personal story emerges from the distorted groupings of the Content-Aware filled pieces.
